Surfing Queensland Media: Chiko Alley Classic – Penultimate Stop On 2012 QCC
Thursday, 3 May 2012Gold Coast, Queensland, Thursday, 3rd May 2012: THE four-event Chiko Queensland Championship Circuit (QCC) continues this May long-weekend with the AUD$6,000 Chiko Alley Classic providing the penultimate stop in the race for the prestigious 2012 Queensland’s Open Men’s Surfing Title.
Indonesia’s Oney Anwar has made his best start to the Queensland Championship Circuit after placing fourth at the series opening Chiko MP Classic on the Gold Coast a fortnight ago, before registering a third place finish at last weekend’s Chiko Sunshine Coast Pro.
Currently sitting equal third on the ratings alongside Snapper Rocks Surfrider Jay Phillips, Anwar is poised to make a charge towards this year’s title and a coveted spot in the 2013 ASP World Tour Quiksilver Pro Trials, with this weekend’s Chiko Alley Classic set to serve up some epic right-hand pointbreak waves at the famed Currumbin Alley.
Surfing Queensland Events Manager Adam Yates said that preliminary swell forecasts look promising for some great waves this weekend.
“A nice easterly swell looks like it’s building into the weekend and with some excellent sand banks behind the rock at Currumbin Alley, we could be in for another epic year,” said Yates.
Based on competitors’ best three-of-four results, the series’ top two athletes will get the chance to compete against the world’s best surfers at the 2013 ASP World Tour Quiksilver Pro Trials.
To ensure the QCC‘s top two athletes are performing at their optimum for the Quiksilver Pro Trials, Surfing Queensland in conjunction with Surfing Australia will provide two-days of training at the world-class Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.
The 2012 QCC boasts a stellar AUD$30,000 prize-pool, with an extra AUD$500 randomly awarded to four competitors who compete in all four events.
Also on offer will be the highly soug ht after XXXX Summer Bright Lager ‘Wave of the Weekend,’ with four cartons of XXXX Summer Bright Lager awarded to the competitor who registers the event’s highest single wave score (out of a possible 10 points) across the two-day competition.
The Chiko Sunshine Coast Pro is proudly supported by Chiko, XXXX Summer Bright Lager, Australia’s Surfing Life, Five and half Sunglasses, the Hurley Surfing Australia High Performance Centre, The Alley Boardriders and Surfing Queensland.
