VB NSW Surfmasters Titles Presented by Mobys Retreat 2012

Boomerang Beach Brings the Barrels

Friday, 15 June 2012

The Great Lakes delivered perfect conditions again today, Boomerang Beach set the stage for Day 2 of the VB Surfmasters NSW Titles, presented by Mobys. Barrels were on the menu and competitors relished in ordering their fair share.

The over 40's lined up mid morning and had spectators in aw with their surfing. Collaroy surfer Carl Musker was just one of the many competitors visiting the green room and moved straight through to round 2 after placing 2nd in his first heat.

"This is fantastic, I come up here for weekends is such a beautiful place and it always delivers up here.
You couldn't ask for more really; a sunny day, smoking waves, I just need a new set of lungs", said Musker after catching a few 7 foot waves.

"There is a lot of water moving around out there, you get such long waves and if you get to the inside its almost impossible to paddle back out, so you have to do the run around", said Musker.

Facing Musker in round 2 is Sawtell surfer Scott Schindler, dominating his heat with an 8.83 and a 9.73, Schindler tallied the highest heat score of the day; a 18.67 out of a possible 20. Schindler walked away today with the VB slab of the day with his stellar performance.

With 6-7 foot waves peeling off the headland at Boomerang Beach, Australian over 45 champion John Schmidenberg (Corindi) and runner up at the ISA World Masters - Glenn Pringle (Cronulla), took their share of barrels once Musker was done.

Pringle short and sweet barrel followed by big hacks off the top propelled him straight to round 2 in the over 40's and over 35's. Claiming a long barrel wasn't enough for Schmidenberg who will now surf in a requal tomorrow to make it to the quarters of the over 40's.

Also doing well and jumping straight to round 2 is Matt Whyte (Cronulla), and Andrew Symington in the over 40's. Local surfer Greg Brooks, Jay Sharp (Long Jetty), Mark Cameron (Woolgoolga) and Patrick Wilkinson from Bensville in the over 35's.

With round 1 of the VB NSW Surfmasters State Titles presented by Mobys completed in great conditions, day 3 is looking good to get the requalifiers and round 2 underway.

The event will also act as the qualifier for Team NSW for the 2012 Australian Surfmasters Titles which are set to be held during the Australian Surf Festival from 11-25 August 2012.
