COFFS HARBOUR (Saturday 28th July, 2012): TEAM NSW is decided as the states most talented junior surfers wrap up an epic week of surfing. The Hurley NSW Junior Surfing State Titles Presented by Vestal Watches, hosted 300 competitors all over NSW in an effort to unearth the 2012 champions.
The early domination of Stephanie Single (Lennox Head) during the week and strong surfing from Kirsten Ogden (Sufflok Park), put the pair in a final with fellow Far North Coasters Coco Beeby (Scotts) and Cai McDonagh (Lennox Head).
As the under 18 girls final got underway the conditions were tough, but wave selection proved fruitful with the experienced surfers who are no strangers to competition. Surfing together at home, in school and on the NSW junior competition circuit, Ogden, Single, Beeby and McDonagh spurred each other on.
Ogden held the lead with a couple of solid left handers, but with three minutes to go Single netted a 7.60 and it was enough to take it out and claim the crown as the under 18 girls champion.
Continuing the winning streak she enjoyed from round 1 in the under 16 girls, against Paris Whittaker (Caringbah), Shannon Hatheier (Cronulla) and Tess Mawson (Manyana) was Newport surfer Holly Warn.
Warn set the standard with her opening wave (7.83) and put her opponents in a combination situation with two minutes to go. The lefts treated her well and surfing with her friends at the Australian Titles is next on the cards for the new under 16 girls champion.
"It's tough but really fun out there, a couple of nice lefts were coming through and I saw Tess grab one early and thought I have to get one of those", said Warn.
"I hung over there and got a really nice one and got a few decent turns on it and it paid off. Surfing with Paris and Tess has been great, we have all surfed together before and the aussies will be great fun", said Warn who also won the under 16 Schools Titles during the week.
Under 14 boys consistent surfer Mitchell Raymond (MacMasters beach), found himself in the final with dominant Byron Bay surfer but Kyuss King. In the rounds leading up to the final Darcy Crump (Avalon) put everything on the line with his combination surfing and this division was a nail biter.
Mitchell came out on top with a combined heat total of 14.90, Crump placed a very close second, King just dropping at 3rd and McGuigan finished 4th.
Surfing with speed, flow and talent well beyond their years was the young girls in the under 14's. The week away surfing with the best NSW surfers did them good and the final was eminent of that with the highest combined heat total in the finals for the day.
Kobie Enright (Tweed Heads) threw three big back-side turns, sticking it through to get the re-form on the inside section, nailing a couple of extra maneuvers on the open face of the wave. The 9.0 ride was eminent of the scores Enright had dropped on the score-board during the event and crowned her under 14 girls champion 2012.
The pint sized under 12 divisions was won by Keanu Miller (Bulli) in the boys and in the girls. Full results are below, TEAM NSW is now decided for the Australian Titles held in Tasmania and competitors will be notified by mail in the weeks to com.
