The Australian Surf Championships Set To Start This Week

Published on 02/08/2023

The Australian Surf Championships kick off in Port Macquarie, NSW this Friday. More than 500 athletes are set to compete in the event, which runs over 17-days.

Matt Hoar (Dalmeny, NSW) was crowned Over 35 Men’s champion in the shortboard division last year and is looking forward to defending his title.

“The Aussie titles are a good measure to see where you’re at for your age and it’s a great opportunity to catch up with old mates from around Australia who still compete. There’s a relaxed atmosphere outside the water as we’re all older/more mature with less on the line, but once in the water, it’s like old times and it’s super competitive.”

The Bonny Hills Beach Hotel has come on board this year as the official venue and will host presentations after each division final as well as entertainment throughout the week.

Kristy and Rob Molloy, from the Bonny Hills Beach Hotel said: “This is our first year as official venue and hopefully the first of many more to come. We have a new menu and weekly specials through the bistro. We are also working with local musicians to get extra gigs going at the Hotel throughout the Championships, as well as our usual Friday nights and Sunday arvo sessions. We have also started weekly poker comps Thursdays and Sundays for a bit of fun. Everyone of all levels is encouraged to join in and every second Tuesday night we have open mic.”

The Hotel will host a general meet and greet for competitors and spectators at 5pm on Friday, 4th of August. Everyone is welcome to join. A Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony is scheduled for Saturday morning as well as the traditional mixing of the water ceremony where every State team brings a flask of their local salt water to be mixed together.

The Bonny Hills Beach Hotel also runs a courtesy bus all day, seven days a week.
