Byron Bay to host the Australian Pro Adaptive Surfing Championship

Published on 08/08/2024

Bryon Bay will host the Australian Pro Adaptive Surfing Championship between March 26 – 30 in a huge win for the region. The event will be an official stop on the Adaptive Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour.

In another huge announcement, the Australian Para Surfing Titles will run on March 24 – 25 in Byron Bay.

Multiple ISA World Adaptive champion and Byron Bay legend Mark ‘Mono’ Stewart has played a major role in bringing both these seperate events to the region and was excited about his home town playing host.

“The Australian Pro Adaptive Surfing Championships committee are stoked to announce our partnership with Surfing Australia for 2025. The event, in Byron Bay 23 – 30 March, will incorporate the Australian National Titles as part of the World Tour event.

“This is an opportunity for Australian athletes planning to take part in the world pro series (AASP) to also fight it out for a spot on the coveted national team.

“The inclusion of the nationals and the newly forged partnership with Surfing Australia will have several benefits for athletes. Cost savings and logistics are always a key consideration when planning events and given many athletes travel and compete at their own expense it makes economic sense to consolidate both events.

“Athletes appreciate that Surfing Australia has been a strong advocate and great supporter of the adaptive surf movement since its inception in 2015.

“Together and in partnership for 2025 we can forge greater opportunities for athletes, grow the sport, provide coaching and training. Showcasing the support and momentum around the world to have the LA28 Paralympic Committee reconsider their position and add para surfing to the LA28 games and Brisbane32,” Stewart said.

Surfing Australia Head of Events, Participation and Community, Luke Madden, said: ” Surfing Australia has always been a huge part of competitive adaptive surfing in this country and we are over the moon to be able to be a part of this stop of the adaptive world tour. The ability to roll both events into one and crown Aussie champions before the tour event gets underway is epic.”
