Ethan Ewing Becomes First Aussie to Provisionally Qualify for Surfing at Paris 2024

Published on 20/07/2023

Based on 2023 World Surf League rankings and competition results at J-Bay where he finished runner up, Ethan Ewing has secured the WSL ranking requirement for qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Australian surfers can qualify for the Games by finishing as one of the top 2 Australian surfers in the top 8 (women’s) or top 10 (men’s) in the 2023 WSL rankings, and by attending all required qualification events under the ISA Paris 2024 qualification system. There is a further chance to qualify additional athletes at the 2024 ISA World Surfing Games.

In July 2024, Surfing Australia will nominate those athletes who have satisfied the Surfing Australia Paris 2024 nomination criteria to the Australian Olympic Committee for selection to the Irukandjis Team.

Ewing provisionally qualified to represent his country at Paris 2024 as he’s guaranteed to be the highest-ranked Australian come year-end.

“It’s huge,” Ewing told the WSL.

“It’s been a huge goal of mine and to go to the Olympics, especially at a wave like Teahupo’o, it’s going to be exciting and something to work towards.”

Surfing made its Olympic debut at Tokyo 2020, where Owen Wright won the bronze medal for Australia.

Surfing Australia National High Performance Director, Kate Wilcomes said: “A massive congratulations to Ethan and his support team and family as the first Australian to provisionally qualify for the Olympics 2024. This is a massive win for Australia and Queensland. Ethan is such an iconic surfer in an out of the water and we can’t wait to see him perform on the Olympic stage at Teahupo’o.”

A big thank you to the Queensland Academy of Sport, Australian Institute of Sport and Australian Olympic Committee for their support throughout this Olympic campaign.
