| Gold Coast, Queensland (Sunday, 22nd November 2020) – Seven individual champions have been crowned today at the Gold Coast leg of the 2020 Woolworths Surfer Grom Comps Series, which was held at the Southport Spit in peaky 2-3ft waves. Olympic head judge Glen Elliot described the day as “some of the best junior surfing I have ever seen” in what was a fun-filled day of action-packed grommet action at a postcard day on the Gold Coast. Burleigh Heads rising star Lucas Deffenti was a notable highlight winning the under 10 boys division before finishing runner up in the under 12 boys shortly after, posting the highest single-wave score of the day courtesy of three giant vertical backhand snaps earning him a 9.7. “I am so hyped. That second turn I did was so big I thought I was going to fall off!” Said Deffenti. “I loved how fun the waves were and also competing against my friends.” Deffenti would then go on to win the Woolworths Fresh Wave Award for the best and fairest male for his efforts. It was a fairytale ending for Moffat Beach sensation Hunter Andersson who after placing third in the under 12 boys, went on to win the under 14 boys division with an incredible display of speed, power and flow on all of his scoring rides. “I am only 11 so it means so much to win the Under 14 boys. Coming up against Landen, Rico and Landen was a real challenge because they are such good surfers. I am so stoked I won! ”Under 14 girls champion, Oli Taylor (Peregian Beach) was delighted to claim the win in a stacked final consisting of Jordy Halford (Currumbin), Ocea Curtis (Lennox Headland) and Ava Argyos (Fingal). “It was such a close final, all of the girls are so good at surfing. Catching that first wave and scoring a 6.17 really set me up for the win. This competition has been so much fun and it’s been the best weekend! ”Other division winners include Max McGillivray (Evans Head), Roxanne Cameron (Miami), Evie Wilson (Sunshine Beach) and Tully Crompton (Gold Coast). Surfers will now prepare for the final leg of the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps, scheduled for the 12th and 13th of December on the Sunshine Coast.
