Jack Robinson has claimed the famed Billabong Pro Pipeline with a win over Italy’s Leonardo Fioravanti in the final.
It was the West Australian’s fourth CT victory heading into his third year on tour.
Robinson’s best two waves scored 9.17 while Fioravanti could only manage 7.47 in what was a week of tough conditions.
Earlier, Robinson caused an upset defeating former event winner and 2x World Champion John John Florence in the quarter-finals. Their expert barrel riding skills were on full-display with some near impossible exits making it one of the most exciting heats of the competition.
Robinson then met Brazilian Joao Chianca in the semis.
“I’ve dreamed of this for a long time, and Andy [Irons] was one of my favourite surfers ever, and it’s just an honour,” Robinson said after his win.
“To feel everything, all the emotions at the start of the year, you don’t know how you’re going to come back. I was feeling good, but you never know with this beast, with Pipeline. This one’s the most special. I’m super grateful for this start here in Hawaii, and I’m just getting myself ready to run that road. It was a low one last year, but I also learned a lot, and there’s no price on that.”
Fellow Aussie, Tyler Wright was beaten in the women’s final to old rival Carissa Moore, who managed a combined two-wave score of 11 points to Wright’s 10.
The WSL next heads to Sunset Beach, Oahu for the Hurley Pro where Robinson will wear the coveted yellow jersey,
