Meet the Top 5 Hyundai Team Electric female surfers

Season two of the Hyundai She’s Electric online competition has wrapped up, and the judges’ scores are in. Today, we are thrilled to reveal the Top 5 ranked female athletes who will make up Hyundai Team Electric:

Willow Hardy (Gnarabup, WA)
Coral Durant (Palm Beach, QLD)
Rosie Smart (Sawtell, NSW)
Quincy Symonds (Tweed Heads, QLD)

The Top 5 will attend a three-day camp at the Hyundai Surfing Australia High Performance Centre next week. Alongside receiving expert coaching and national exposure, each surfer will have the chance to win $5000 cash plus a VIP experience at the Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle Grand Final, with former World Tour surfer Laura Enever.

Surfing Australia’s Manager of Boardrider Clubs and Judging, Glen Elliott, praised the female judges who awarded prizes throughout the three-month competition period.

“The success of Hyundai She’s Electric was highlighted by the number of entries we had from across Australia. The overall standard was outstanding, showing that the girls are charging. From big barrels to airs, it’s just great to see.”

All Top 5 athletes said they were stoked to have made Hyundai Team Electric.

Anne Dos Santos said: “It’s pretty special to have been selected as a Top 5 athlete based on the video submissions because there are so many talented surfer girls in Australia. I was watching everyone’s submissions and frothing out at how high the level of surfing was for this online event.”

Willow Hardy said: “It’s always so fun to surf with the girls and super exciting that female surfing has so much support and so many amazing role models.”

Coral Durant said: “I’m really happy to make the Top 5, I saw some incredible entries throughout the whole year from the Aussie girls so to end up making it here feels great… It’s so cool to see so much support in women’s surfing here in Australia, it’s definitely deserved and I feel so privileged to get this opportunity.”

Rosie Smart said: “The online format allowed me to put in my best surfing without the pressure and time frame of a heat. Instead of the normal ‘three to the beach’ heat scenario, the She’s Electric competition encouraged all of the girls to push ourselves and try something new.”

Quincy Symonds said: “It’s an amazing opportunity and such a great way to encourage young woman to pursue their dreams of surfing.”

About Hyundai She’s Electric:
Hyundai She’s Electric, an online surfing competition open to all female athletes aged 14 and over throughout Australia, has returned for its highly anticipated second season. This program is designed to discover female surfers from across the country, providing them with national exposure and the opportunity to access some of Australia’s best coaches at Surfing Australia’s national surf training facility, the Hyundai High Performance Centre (HPC) in Casuarina, NSW.

The competition spanned 12 weeks from October to December, 2023. Following the online submission of their best waves, Surfing Australia’s expert team of female judges, led by Head Judge of Olympic Surfing for Tokyo, Glen Elliott, reviewed the clips and created a leaderboard to rank the athletes. Those with the top 5 highest-scoring waves at the end of the competition become Hyundai Team Electric.

The Top 5 athletes will attend a surf camp at the Hyundai Surfing Australia HPC, that includes three-days of intensive training, surf analysis conducted by some of Australia’s leading surf coaches, surf-specific strength and conditioning sessions, and workshops led by surfing icons and pioneers of women’s surfing. Additionally, the athletes placing second through fifth will each receive $1000, while the winner will be awarded $5000 and a VIP experience at the Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle Grand Final with former World Tour surfer Laura Enever.

The total prize pool exceeds $35,000 and includes the newly created ‘Bright Spark’ award, with weekly winners receiving a GoPro 11.

The competition is also showcased in a new four-part series, ‘Hyundai She’s Electric Show’, hosted by Tru and Jesse Starling, with the first two episodes available to watch HERE.
