The 20th annual Occy’s Grom Comp wrapped up in pumping, Championship Tour–quality surf, as Finals Day delivered flawless conditions at Snapper Rocks. The iconic point break offered a world-class canvas for Australia’s most promising junior surfers, with a rising swell and clean morning winds setting the stage for one of the most memorable conclusions in the event’s two-decade history.
This year marked a significant milestone, celebrating 20 years of the Occy’s Grom Comp. First held at Duranbah Beach, the event shifted to Snapper Rocks in 2024 — a move that athletes, coaches, and spectators have since praised for elevating the standard of performance.
Running across Under 12 to Under 18 age divisions for both male and female surfers, the event forms part of the Surfing Australia Junior Series — a national competition framework designed to mirror the Qualifying Series structure. It offers a clear and competitive pathway for surfers aiming to build their national ranking and, ultimately, earn selection in the Irukandjis Team for the ISA World Junior Championships.

Finals Day featured exceptional performances, with Sage Fleming (QLD) and Maverick Macgugan (NSW) rising to the occasion in the Under 12 divisions. Macgugan’s 9.10 ride early in the day set the tone for a string of high-performance heats that followed. In the Under 14s, Leihani Kaloha Zoric (NSW) defended her 2024 Occy’s Grom Comp title with innovative aerial surfing, while Tully Crompton (QLD) took out the Under 14 Boys final with smart wave selection and polished rail work.

Eliza Richardson (QLD) delivered a standout performance in the Under 16 Girls final, posting an 18.00 heat total and showing her strength on backhand waves. In the Under 16 Boys division, Luca Martin (QLD), backed up his 2024 title with another dominant showing, cementing his status as one of the country’s most consistent junior surfers. Ocea Curtis (NSW) controlled the Under 18 Girls final from start to finish, comboing her opponent early in what was her last junior appearance. The event concluded with a thrilling Under 18 Boys final between Kash Brown (NSW) from Cronulla and local talent Jesse Fergusson (QLD). Both surfers scored in the dying moments of the heat, but it was Brown who took the win with a 9.23 — the highest wave score of the match-up.
