Palm Beach Currumbin win inaugural Australian Interschools Surfing Championships presented by Ghanda

Published on 24/05/2024

Palm Beach Currumbin State High School has taken home the overall school winners trophy at the first Australian Interschools Surfing Championships presented by Ghanda at Miami on the Gold Coast.

An increased period in east swell made for great conditions to get things underway with both the Year 7,8,9 Girls and Year 10,11,12 Girls Tag Team divisions battling it out on the main bank. In the younger division, it was Sunshine Beach State High School who utilised the conditions and made the best wave choices to bank a huge win over locals Palm Beach Currumbin Dolphins (PBC) .They went one better in the senior girls heats, taking the aggregate win over the three heats ahead of Lindisfarne in second and Bulli State High in third.

Both senior and junior Boys divisions had a fresh southerly wind to contend with from mid morning but that long period swell still offered plenty of scoring opportunities for the likes Henry Dowling, who swooped in to claim victory in the last seconds of the Year 7,8,9 Boys Individual Final. Dowling posted an excellent 8.35 point ride with 30 seconds on the clock to jump over the top of Jai Nield (8.15 points) and Lachland Arghyros (8.00 points) in a thriller.

In the last heat of the day it was a who’s who of Year 10,11,12 Boys battling it out. Taking serious form into the final were Scott Arderne, Samuel Lowe, Riley Munro, Brayten Pringault, Harry O’Brien and Zyah Hession. Lowe stepped it up a gear in a big way, just beating Munro by a minuscule margin, 8.05 points to 8.00 points as the surf pulsed for the last 30 minutes.
