Semifinalists decided at the Woolworths Australian Junior Surfing Titles

Published on 30/11/2023

The Woolworths Australian Junior Surfing Titles powered through a crucial day of competition to determine the first semifinalists in the U18 Men’s and Women’s divisions. Surfing resumed at Cape Woolamai this morning after wild weather caused a lay day yesterday.

Willem Watson (VIC) posted the highest heat total of the day in U18 Men, a 14.26, to book his spot in the semifinals. Also making it through were Landen Smales (QLD), Eden Hasson (NSW), Jimmi Hill (NSW), Fred Carmody (NSW) and Macklin Flynn (WA).

Flynn, who has also progressed to the final in the MR Shield, said: “It’s really fun here and there are some good waves around this place. I can’t wait to be surfing the MR final with my best mate from school. Everyone supports everyone and I think it keeps me going with all the positive energy.”

In U18 Women, Willow Hardy (WA) put on a dominant display in her quarterfinal heat, posting an excellent 9.05 (out of a possible 10) single wave score. Hardy, Shyla Short (NSW), and Sarah Young (QLD) all won their quarterfinal heats and will be joined in the semis by Ruby Berry (WA), Natalie Fensom (NSW) and Jordy Halford (QLD).

Finalists were also decided in the U16 Boys and Girls schools divisions for the MR Shield.

Contest Director, Liam Robertson said: “It was great to get competition back underway today after a lay day. We had some super fun 2-3ft peaks at Cape Woolamai. The level of surfing has been incredible today and we’re looking forward to moving into finals over the coming days.”
