The ISA Joins United Nations’ ‘Sports for Climate Action’ Initiative to Further Prioritise Sustainability

La Jolla, California, December 17, 2020 – The International Surfing Association (ISA) has today announced it has joined the United Nations’ ‘Sports for Climate Action’ – an initiative that helps and guides sports to reach their climate goals – to deepen the ISA’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Championed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the initiative provides sports organisations with a forum for collaboration to share best practices, lessons learned and new tools to help achieve global climate goals and to support a collective effort to combat climate change.
In joining the initiative, the ISA has committed to the following principles, which form part of the framework:
Undertake systematic efforts to promote greater environmental responsibilityReduce overall climate impactEducate for climate actionPromote sustainable and responsible consumptionAdvocate for climate action through communication
This move becomes the latest initiative following the ISA’s commitment in 2018 to make sustainability a core value of the organisation and partner with the IOC to support the United Nations-led CleanSeas Campaign to join the fight against marine plastic litter. To learn more about the ISA’s sustainability efforts, click here. ISA President, Fernando Aguerre, said: “As surfers, we have a deep connection to the environment and must do all we can to protect and fight for a clean and healthy planet. We need to work in unison to ensure that future generations can share our passion and love for the sport and the Earth.
“Tackling climate change is the biggest challenge of our times and we must all join in a collective effort to reduce pollution and our own footprint on the natural environment.
“We are proud to be working with the UN, the IOC and sports organisations across the world to spread sustainability best practices and drive progress.”
