Top seeds fail to fire on Day 4 of the 2022 Woolworths Australian Junior Surfing Titles

Several top seeds have failed to fire in challenging conditions on Day 4 of the Woolworths Australian Junior Surfing Titles.

Surfing Australia Contest Director, Glen Elliott said it was a day of upsets with state champions among those knocked out of the competition.

“The contest was ready to go at Main Beach before the conditions started to deteriorate. The wind and the swell picked up quite quickly so the call was made to relocate to Deadman’s Beach and set up again,” he said.

In Round 3 of Under 18 Women Willow Hardy (Gnarabup, WA) and Urara Saito (Gold Coast, QLD) led the charge winning their early heats. But the standout surfer was Keira Buckpitt dropping a 9.00 opening ride in heat three to finish with a 15.00 two-wave score.

They’ll join other heat winners Coco Cairn (Tewantin, QLD), Poppy Sweetman (Middleton, SA) and Oceanna Rogers (Shell Cove, NSW) in the quarter final.

In U16 Men Maverick Wilson (Dunsborough, WA) posted a 7.00 first wave score to finish his heat on 12.50. Zyah Hession (Coolangatta, QLD) and Fletcher Kelleher (Freshwater, NSW) also impressed both posting 10.65 heat totals in the tricky conditions.

Organisers expect more unruly weather tomorrow with even stronger winds forecast.

The 2022 Woolworths Australian Junior Surfing Titles encompass individual divisions for U14 – U18 Junior Men and Women as well as school surfing divisions for U16 – U19 (Allstars & MR Shield) Junior Men and Women.

Surfing Australia would like to acknowledge the Quandamooka people as the traditional owners of the land on which the competition will be held and we pay our respects to elders, past, present and emerging and thank them for the opportunity.

The event is supported by Surfing Australia, Surfing Queensland, Ruffie, Redlands City Council and QYAC.
