Woolworths SurfGroms Dive Into A Fresh New Season

Published on 08/09/2021

CURRUMBIN/QUEENSLAND(September 8th, 2021): Surfing Australia and Woolworths are today launching the newest season of Woolworths SurfGroms, with a fresh approach to encourage young Aussies to live healthier lifestyles through surfing.

Nearly 50 surf schools will deliver Woolworths SurfGroms programs this year, offering youngsters aged 5 – 12 years old the opportunity to learn to surf while developing strong ocean awareness and beach safety skills.

Woolworths Head of Community & Sponsorships Sarah De La Mare said: “We take great pride in supporting junior surfing across Australia, and Woolworths SurfGroms is a great way for young athletes to develop their surfing ability; from when they first hit the ocean through to the championship leagues.”

“There’s a natural connection between fresh food and young athletes performing at their best, and we look forward to encouraging Groms on their surfing pathway to a healthy and active lifestyle.”

Soli Bailey, Woolworths Ambassador said: “Surfing is a great way to stay active – it’s fun and doesn’t feel like exercise! I remember riding my first wave and the sense of accomplishment that came with it. It is awesome that Woolworths SurfGroms will help Aussie kids have these same experiences, and how fresh food can help them become better surfers.”

Since the program was launched in October 2011, more than 80,000 Australian children have experienced the thrill of surfing for the first time. Registrations for the latest events are now open, just in time for summer.

Surfing Australia CEO Chris Mater said: “It’s always exciting to launch a new season of any of our programs and events, but with Woolworths now as the naming rights partner of the SurfGroms program, this year’s launch has a special feel to it.”

“We can’t wait to get as many 5-12-year-olds through Woolworths SurfGroms over summer and into 2022 as possible because we know it makes healthier, happier, fitter, fun groms!”

All children who enter the program also receive a Rip Curl poncho towel.

Woolworths SurfGroms programs are available through the Surfing Australia Surf Schools Network with nearly 50 delivery partners around the country. Parents can register their children through the website – www.surfgroms.com – which will provide contact details for their closest delivery centre.

Bugs Softboards are what Woolworths SurfGroms learn on and are purpose-built to give learners and first-time participants the best experience possible as they learn to surf. While standard soft boards can often hinder a beginner due to over-flexing, Bugs Softboards have a high rigidity core and a lamination sequence that provides a super sturdy, safe and stable platform so beginners can easily jump to their feet and confidently ride waves. They’re also designed to withstand the toughest of treatment associated with repetitive surf school use.

The Woolworths SurfGroms program is backed by major naming sponsor Woolworths along with presenting partner Rip Curl, Hyundai, Bugs Softboards, 2XP® SPF 50+, Feducian, Cool Cabanas, Surfing Australia and Sport Australia.

NOTE: Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and Surfing Australia’s commitment to comply with all State and Federal health regulations, series dates are subject to change at any time.
