PARIS 2024: Wright waits as rough swell pushes out surfing

Published on 01/08/2024

Australians Tyler Wright, Jack Robinson and Ethan Ewing will spend another day on the beach after Olympic surfing was postponed due to heavy swells.

The infamous Teahupo’o break in French Polynesia is hosting the Paris Games’ surfing, roughly 15,000km from mainland France.

Officials took a boat right to the competition’s surfing area on Thursday morning (AEST) before returning to land and considering their call.

They opted to play it safe, calling off surfing for the second-straight day.

Just like World Surf League meets, Olympic surfing utilises lay days to ensure competitors are not subjected to horror conditions, or asked to score points without sufficient swell.

Needing four days to run through to the medals, the competition is stuck after two and a half days.

The men’s heats are finished and just eight remain, including Ewing and Robinson who will battle in an all-Australian quarter-final.

Before the medals day, the women need to finish their round-three heats, including Wright, the two-time world champion.

Wright, who convincingly won an opening-day heat against Israel’s Anat Leilor, faces a round-of-16 duel with the same competitor.

Officials will give an indication later on Thursday about whether competition will resume on Friday (AEST), with more accomodating weather forecast.
