The YETI Australian Junior Surfing Titles got underway today with a full day of action in clean three-foot surf at Woonona Beach in Wollongong, New South Wales.
More than 250 surfers are set to compete over seven days, seeking crucial ranking points and, for some, a chance to represent the Irukandjis Team at the 2025 ISA World Junior Surfing Championship.
Contest Director Jeremy Barnett said: “Today’s surfers were greeted with a clean three-foot swell at Woonona. The winds were light from the northeast, which made for an epic day of competition. Lachlan Arghyros in the Under 16 Men’s and Rosie Richardson in the Under 16 Women’s divisions were both standouts, and both scoring 7.13, while Kai Coleman in the Under 14 Boys posted an excellent 8.25.”
Evie Wilson from the Sunshine Coast (Marcus Beach, QLD), who won her Round 1 heat in the U14 Girls, said: “I went in with a positive mindset. On the beach, I looked at my markers and just waited for the sets, and they came through. I’ve never been here before, and so far it’s been really good. The waves have been really fun. Good shorey banks, and also, on the competition bank, you can get them all the way through.”
Kade Kelly (Newcastle, NSW), who is also through to Round 2 in the Under 14 Boys, said:
“It’s been really fun. Peaky conditions, a couple of rights, a couple of lefts. It’d mean everything to win an Australian Junior Surfing Title. That’s my goal.”
Similar conditions are forecast for tomorrow, with the day kicking off with the Under 18 Boys and Girls divisions at Woonona.
