Aussie Adaptive Surfing Champions invited to Waco Surf in Texas

Published on 25/10/2023

Byron Bay’s Mark “Mono” Stewart and Jocelyn Neumueller from Adelaide have returned home after an epic surfing session hundreds of kilometres away from any beach.

The Association of Adaptive Surfing Professionals (AASP) World Champions crowned on the 2023 WCT were invited to world-class wave park, Waco Surf in Texas, for a private two-day session, thanks to High Fives Foundation.

Showcasing their skills in a competitor-based contest (non-judged), Mono said he caught well over 100 waves.

“It’s pretty surreal walking through the airport in Texas lugging surfboards,” he said.

“The giant 10-gallon hat wearing Texans gave us some strange looks. The hospitality was next level and the multitude of wave selection in the pool made for some challenging sections.”

Neumueller agreed: “The experience was epic. The High Fives Foundation put on a fantastic few days catering for our needs in and out of the pool. Made the extended travel time worth it. Great to surf a more natural wave, with some of the world’s top para surfers to get some good training in for the ISA World Championship.”

Neumueller was the AASP 2023 World Champion in the prone assist and Stewart won the World Title kneeling division.

The ISA World Para Championship is scheduled for November 5 – 11 at Huntington Beach, California.
