From the iconic waves of Bells Beach to the East Coast of NSW, and the sunlit shores of Queensland, Australian surfing was on full display this week with three major events crowning champions, celebrating culture, and showcasing the nation’s incredible depth of talent.
Indigenous Surfing Takes Centre Stage at Bells Beach
The 2025 Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles wrapped up in spectacular fashion at Djarrak (Bells Beach) on Sunday, with elite performances and emotional victories across multiple divisions.
Landen Smales (QLD) proved unstoppable, taking out both the Open Men’s Shortboard and Longboard titles, including a near-perfect 9.67 ride. Lehaini Zoric (NSW) was the standout in the Open Women’s and Junior Girls, showcasing maturity and flair in dominant back-to-back wins. Melissa Combo (NSW) impressed in the Women’s Longboard, while Rhys Collins (VIC) earned the Masters Men’s crown.
The event wasn’t only about competition, it was a gathering of connection, culture, and community. Zac Maloney (NSW) was honoured with the Community Spirit Award for his sportsmanship throughout the week.

Queensland’s Grommets Bring the Heat on the Sunshine Coast
Event One of the 2025 Queensland Grommet Surfing Titles lit up Alex Skate Park Beach on Sunday in clean 3-foot conditions, with junior surfers putting their best foot forward for state glory and a place at the 2025 Australian Junior Surfing Titles.
Sage Fleming stole the show in the U12 Girls with a commanding victory, while Flynn Swierczewski snatched the U12 Boys title in dramatic fashion with a 7.93 in the dying seconds. Navah Holmes and Brandon Davidson rounded out an exciting day in the U14 divisions.
The groms now head to the Gold Coast (21–22 June) for Event Two, where results will be combined to decide the overall Queensland Champions.

NSW State Classic Unites Surfing Divisions
Held across six days in Coffs Harbour, the 2025 State Classic made history by bringing five state titles — Junior, Masters, Longboard, SUP, and High School — under one banner for the first time.
With over 600 surfers aged from 10 to 80+, the event combined high-performance surfing with vibrant community activations. Top performing surfers have now earnt a spot in the NSW state surfing team, and will go on to surf at Nationals in their respective divisions.
In the Junior event, Ocea Curtis and Ben Zanatta claimed the Under 18 Girls and Boys titles, while Lucy Darragh and Joey Silk secured wins in the Under 16 divisions.
Keira Buckpitt took out the Open Women’s title, with Koda Killorn claiming victory in the Open Men’s division. In Longboard, Mahli Abbott and Archy Bemrose were crowned Open champions.
Illawarra Sports High cemented itself as one of the state’s most dominant High Schools, taking top honours in both the Senior Boys and Senior Girls categories.
The event also showcased strong SUP performances, with Skyla Rayner and Wesley Fry winning the Open Men’s and Women’s divisions.
