“Best waves I’ve ever seen in my life.” – Maverick Wilson
“This is the best trip I’ve ever been on.” – Samuel Lowe
There are training camps, and then there are strike missions.
This one fell firmly into the latter.
Surfing Australia’s High Performance Pathway Program took a select group of emerging athletes to Fiji, targeting one of the heaviest and most technically demanding waves in the world: Cloudbreak.
Consequential surf. Skill refinement. 3 goofy footers on the trip of their dreams.
Harley Walters, Maverick Wilson, and Samuel Lowe got exactly what they were searching for.
One day in particular pushed into the 15-foot range, with consistent sets in the five-times overhead bracket. For a crew of goofy footers, it was a rare alignment — a natural advantage meeting a wave that demands total commitment on the forehand.
The focus areas were clear. Forehand turns and tube riding. Decision-making at speed. Nothing simulated about it. Real reps in real conditions, guided by ex-Championship Tour (CT) Surfer and now HPP Program Coach, Wade Carmichael, with experience and insight from CT surfer and Podium Athlete, Jacob Wilcox.
But beyond the sessions themselves, the strike mission reflects a broader system at work.
The Surfing Australia High Performance Program is built to develop not only world-class surfers, but well-rounded individuals capable of sustaining long-term careers at the top of the sport. Within that structure, the Pathway Program plays a critical role in identifying athletes under 22 with Olympic potential and accelerating their progression through exposure, experience and targeted development.
Luke Macdonald, Head of Pathway Program, Surfing Australia.
“I was blown away by what the team were able to pull off with the Fiji strike mission. These trips are always challenging to line up with the right conditions, but our Pathway filmer Hunter Vercoe and Operations Lead, Kia Schubert killed it pulling it together and rallying the crew. Credit as well to Pathway Coaches Peter Duncan and Chelsea Hedges for getting the athletes ready, and to Wade Carmichael for jumping in last minute to support.
The purpose of these strikes is to provide a highly targeted environment for athletes to work on a key development priority in the right conditions, and for Sammy, Harley and Maverick that focus was forehand turns on big, open walls. While it was unfortunate that Harley picked up an injury on day one, he still managed to put down some huge turns, and Sammy and Maverick made the most of the opportunity, scoring exactly what we were after and more, including some solid Cloudbreak barrels, and looked really comfortable in waves of consequence.“

Hunter Vercoe, Pathway Filmer, Surfing Australia.
“It was easily some of the best surfing I’ve ever filmed. I was so impressed with how our Pathway athletes handled the conditions and stood out in a lineup full of world class surfers. I’m so excited to share this piece and shine the spotlight on our athletes.“
Each surfer operates within an Individual Performance Plan (IPP), aligning technical goals with competition strategy and personal growth. Camps like this are where those plans are pressure-tested.
Fiji doesn’t offer easy outcomes. It sharpens talent and exposes what can be improved.
For this group, it was another step toward becoming Irukandji and Challenger Series ready.
