Big Surf Incoming For Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle Newcastle Grand Final

Published on 03/02/2022

CASUARINA/NSW(Thursday, 3rd February/2022):  A challenging southeast swell is forecast for the Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle Series Grand Final at Newcastle Main Beach this weekend, February 5th and 6th.

Saturday looks like being a mix of short period wind swell and a new southeast swell that comes with strong to moderate onshore winds. There’s not going to be a lack of size either day of competition according to Newcastle Surf Forecaster and Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle Grand Final commentator Teza McKenna who said the weekend’s action will make for compelling viewing from both on the beach or the live broadcast via FoxSports Channel 505.

“It looks like being a challenging weekend for competitors with a mountainous 2 to 3 metre SE swell expected across both days. This will be accompanied by strong southeasterly winds making for some exciting conditions for the competitors representing their clubs. Thankfully the sandbanks at Newcastle beach are in great shape and should handle conditions, it will be an incredible spectacle to watch!” said McKenna.

Coffs Harbour Boardriders Club legend and former tour competitor Lee Winkler was cagey with his response when asked how the Coffs team would respond to the challenge of wild surf.

“Our club learnt some valuable lessons from a similar swell at a surf tag event last year and will hope to put those experiences to good use when things get solid this weekend at Newcastle Main Beach,” said Winkler.
