Boardriders set to battle this weekend on the Sunshine Coast

Published on 27/10/2023

Queensland clubs are preparing for battle at the sixth stop of the Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle (ABB) series this Sunday, 29th October, on the Sunshine Coast. Fourteen of Queensland’s best boardrider clubs will be competing in the event, including reigning champions, Snapper Rocks Surfriders.

The single-day qualifier event will showcase the depth of talent in Queensland, from emerging juniors through to former World Championship Tour surfers, all proud to represent their local clubs as they battle for hotly contested positions in the Grand Final, which will be held at Burleigh Heads, March 9 – 10, 2024.

With a mixture of Gold Coast, North Stradbroke Island and Sunshine Coast clubs competing in the event, we’re expecting an exciting day of competition from a stacked field of surfers. Names to watch include Bede Durbidge (Point Lookout BRC), Alister Reginato (North Shore BRC), Sophie McCulloch(North Shore BRC), Chris Zaffis (North End BRC) and Ellie Brooks (MNM BRC).

The Hyundai ABB is a distinctive ‘tag team’ team format where clubs must select 2x Open Men, 1x Open Woman, 1x Master (over 35 years) and 1x Junior (under 18 years) to compete. Each surfer will be scored on their best two waves and must return to the beach after completing their waves, before ‘releasing’ the next team member into the waves.

The event will be broadcast LIVE on on the mySURFtv YouTube channel and Kayo Sports.

Surfing Queensland would like to thank Sunshine Coast Council, The Point Coolum, QMS Media, Travla, Dritimes, Ancestral Nutrition, Suzuki Queensland, We Are Feel Good Inc and the Queensland Government for their ongoing support.
