Finals day of the Sunshine Coast Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp sets stars up for the National Final

UNSHINE COAST, QUEENSLAND (Sunday 12 December 2021)

Finals day of the Sunshine Coast Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp has officially wrapped up, with the U14 winners set to prepare for the National Finals next weekend! The grommets were faced with testing 3-4 ft shifting peaks at Ann Street Reef, Currimundi.  

The Under 12 Girls Division was won by Rosie Richardson (SUNSHINE BEACH) with a final two-wave score of 13.97. Runner up was sister Eliza Richardson (SUNSHINE BEACH) (12.83), followed by Savannah Reilly (DICKY BEACH) (11.27) and MillerMay Berg (MIAMI) (6.57).  

The Under 12 Boys Division was taken out by Lucas Deffenti (MIAMI) with a heat total of 14.60. Lucas defeated Cooper Rielly (DICKY BEACH) (12.93), Ashton Tutt (BUDDINA) (10.26) and Oscar Burrows (ALEXANDRA HEADLAND) (10.04).    

Rosie Richardson (SUNSHINE BEACH)also took out the Under 14 Girls Division, posting the highest individual wave score and highest individual heat score with 9.17 and 17.34 respectively. She beat Laney Stokes (KAWANA) (12.50), Eliza Richardson (6.67) and Meika Locke (PALM BEACH) (5.67).

“The weekend was really awesome, the conditions were fun and I am looking forward to the National Finals,” said Richardson. 

In a tight final in the Under 14 Boys Division, Darcy Dwyer (SUNSHINE BEACH) took the honours with a 13.00 heat total. He overcame Mitchell Peterson (NOOSAVILLE) (12.66), Jesse Ferguson (SUNSHINE BEACH) (10.17) and Caden Francis (COOLANGATTA) (8.40).

“The event has been amazing, everyone surfed so well and it was a hard final,” said Dwyer. “I’m looking forward to the National Finals. It will be great seeing all the other competitors, surfing and having fun with everyone!”

The Woolworths Fresh Pick Awards went to Ashton Tutt and MillerMay Berg for their outstanding sportsmanship shown during the event, with Evie Wilson and Bali Dobson winning the Pic’s Peanut Butter Star Performer Awards for showing their future elite surfing abilities.

The National Finals will be held at HPC, Casuarina in NSW on 17 – 19 December. We are excited to see these junior stars fight for the crown! 

About the 2021 Woolworths Surfer Grom Comp Series

Regarded as one of the major steppingstones in the development of young Australian surfers, the 10-event Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps series caters for surfers from Under 8 to Under 14 and will be held in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia over summer.

As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses-paid, three-day Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps National Final Surf Camp, (1-day coaching clinic, two days of competition and heat analysis coaching) at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC). For the South Australian, Victorian and Tasmanian events, the Woolworths Surf Camp prize will be awarded to the highest place Under-14 Boy and Girl who reside in that respective state.
