Mahoney and Huppatz crowned champions at Gunnamatta Beach for finals day of the Woolworths Victorian Junior Titles.

Published on 15/01/2021

The Woolworths Victorian Junior Titles resumed at Gunnamatta Beach today for finals day of the first round in the three event series.

Conditions were tricky yet again, with a building swell in the 3-4 foot range and strong onshore winds creating choppy conditions.

Claiming the win in the Under 18 Girl’s division was Mia Huppatz (Jan Juc), who took advantage of some larger sized sets on the outer banks.

Huppatz posted a combined heat total of 14.13 (out of a possible 20), and left her competition chasing near excellent scores to gain the lead.

“The conditions were pretty average, but there were a couple of fun ones to be had” said Huppatz

“I managed to get lucky out the back, and find a couple of end sections to hit” she added.

Finishing in second was Poppy Corbett (Phillip Island) with Ellie Harrison (Barwon Heads) and Minnie Vorrath (Pt Lonsdale) in third and fourth respectively.

Charlie Mahoney (Barwon Heads) snuck away form his competition in the Under 18 Boys, and surfed the back bank  in the Final whilst his competition staying on the inside reforms. He managed to snag a couple of nice waves, and was able to score rides in the excellent range – a 8.67 & 8.90 (out of a possible 10) to claim victory.

“It was big and wild out there” Mahoney said

“I saw a couple fun lefts out the back and decided to head out there” he added.

Hot on Mahoney’s tail was Ethan Huxtable (Jan Juc), who posted one of the highest scores seen throughout both days of competition – a 9.07 ride. Huxtable pieced together a nice three turn combination, however he wasn’t able to find a backup wave, and was left chasing a 8.51 to get into the lead.

Finishing in third and fourth was Charlie Farrer (Barwon Heads) and Asher Lens (Jan Juc).

Other division winners from finals day of the Woolworths Junior Titles held at Gunnamatta included Jerry Kelly (Barwon Heads, U14 Boys), Willis Droomer (Jan Juc, U16 Boys), Sarsha Panic (Mornington Peninsula, U16 Girls) and Maeve Wilkinson (Inverloch, U14 Girls).
