Mia Huppatz and Marlon Harrison take out the 2021 Macro Mike Australian Open of Surfing Sunshine Coast Pro

Published on 10/10/2021

SUNSHINE COAST, QUEENSLAND – Mia Huppatz and Marlon Harrison have taken out the 2021 Macro Mike Australian Open of Surfing Sunshine Coast Pro.

Competitors were greeted with clean, offshore conditions and a two-foot swell at Coolum Beach. Despite the favourable conditions early, the surf became challenging later in the day as onshore winds picked up.

The Women’s final was stacked with Gold Coasters, and was won by Mia Huppatz (BILINGA) with a combined two wave score of 10.14 (out of a possible 20.00). She beat Raya Campbell (COOLANGATTA) (9.16), Concha Balsemao (CURRUMBIN) (7.00) and Jade Wheatley (CURRUMBIN) (5.50).

Huppatz, who has recently relocated to the Gold Coast from Victoria, said she wasn’t prepared for her win.

“I haven’t surfed against many of these girls so I wasn’t sure how’d I go. I’m very excited for the win.”

“The Gold Coast is very different from Victoria, and I’m still adjusting to my new home. But Queensland is a great place to be based,” Huppatz said.

In a heat that went down to the dying seconds, the Men’s final was won by Marlon Harrison (COOLANGATTA) with a combined two wave score of 14.40 (out of a possible 20.00). He beat Hinata Aizawa (PALM BEACH) (12.77), Connor Lyons (NOOSA) (10.50) and Taj Stokes (BUDDINA) (9.97).

Harrison said he couldn’t believe he snuck in the win.

“It was such a close finish. I’m very grateful I got that last wave right at the end. It was a great finish to a big weekend of surfing.”
