The opening day of the final NSW based Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps pres. by Pic’s Peanut Butter for 2020 kicked off at Cronulla today with competitors surfing beyond their years in two-foot surf.

Sullivan Tucker (Freshwater) made his presence felt in his first Under-12 Boys heat, posting a massive 16.17 two-wave heat total. Tucker linked together a chain of impressive snaps and carves to post the total.

Other Under-12 Boys standouts included: Rene Galloway (Newport) and  Joe Hatton (Bronte) who both managed to post decent heat totals over the duration of the two rounds of 12 Boys.

Local competitor Grace Gosby (Caringbah) carried the flag for the next generation of Cronulla surfers posting a giant 14.33 two-wave heat total to take out her opening heat. Grosby will face Bodhi Simon (Port Kembla) and Marley McCallum (Randwick) in the quarterfinals tomorrow.

Jaggar Phillips (Maroubra) showed he’d be a name to watch in the upcoming years, putting on a solid show in the Under-10 Boys. The Maroubra goofy-footer notched up the highest heat total of the division today, posting a decent 12.20 two-wave total.

The second and final day of the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps pres. by Pic’s Peanut Butter will resume in Cronulla tomorrow.

The elite event will see male and female surfers competing in four different age divisions, starting at Under-8’s right through to the Under-14’s.

Close to 80 competitors are in the event.

Surfing NSW requires all competitors to complete a Covid-19 survey on your health status and where they have been 14-days prior to competition.

Regarded as one of the major steppingstones in the development of young Australian surfers, the 10-event Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps series caters for surfers from Under 8 to Under 14 and will be held in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania and South Australia over summer.

As an added bonus, the respective winners of the Under 14 boys’ and girls’ divisions from each event will receive an invite to attend an all-expenses-paid, three-day Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps National Final Surf Camp, (1-day coaching clinic, 2 days of competition and heat analysis coaching) at the Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre (HPC). For the South Australian, Victorian and Tasmanian events, the Woolworths Surf Camp prize will be awarded to the highest place Under-14 Boy and Girl who reside in that respective State.
