Q&A with Jackson Baker

Published on 15/11/2024

Jackson Baker is a former CT surfer from Merewether in Newcastle, NSW, known for his no-nonsense attitude, candid post-heat commentary and, of course, that distinct moustache! Jacko continues to compete in the Challenger Series, driven by a deep personal motivation following the loss of his mother to breast cancer in 2016. In 2024, he made headlines by donating part of his competition winnings from the Saquarema Pro to a family in need, after learning a friend’s wife was battling breast cancer. This gesture reflects his commitment to giving back and honouring his late mother’s memory. Now, Jacko’s on a new fundraising mission. We caught up with him to find out more.

How has the memory of your mum inspired your surfing career?

It has inspired me to pursue my dream of making the World Tour and continuing to make her proud every day with anything and everything that I do.

You’re on a new fundraising mission and have created a t-shirt called the ‘Baker Boys’. Tell us about that…

Really, really cool opportunity. We Are Posi and Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) reached out with an idea to do a fundraiser, and we came up the idea to make a shirt in memory of my mum and Oskar’s mum and make it a fashionable shirt with also an extra purpose and meaning. Ben Ross jumped on board and designed an amazing shirt, which we are thrilled to have on sale now with 50% of profits going straight to the BCNA.

Australian artist Ben Ross has also designed a surfboard that will be auctioned for BCNA – have you got your eye on it? And how do people get behind this campaign?

Yeah I’ve been lucky enough to get eyes on my board. Well not my board for much longer. Kind of wish I kept of for myself haha. Maybe I’ll have to buy it back in the Auction.

You can get behind the campaign by buying a shirt on posisocks.com and the link is also on my Instagram profile www.instagram.com/jacko_baker bio. I’ll also have the link there for the online auction of the board when we have that link available super soon.

And what’s next for you in your professional surfing career?

Next for me, get back on the World Tour 2026 and use my image and platforms to raise more and more awareness for such a great cause in the BCNA.

Big love to all the mums, sisters, aunties, family members and everyone affected by breast cancer.
