Surfing Australia is thrilled to announce the return of the Seas The Day Celebrity Surf Challenge. This fun tag team contest will see Gold Coast Suns AFLW players hit the water alongside media personalities, big wave surfers and legends of the sport as they compete for bragging rights and Seas The Day Celebrity Surf Challenge trophy.
To kick off the Celebrity Surf Challenge, Surfing Australia invited Suns players GeorgiaClayden, CharlieRowbottom and CharlotteWilson along with their Strength & Conditioning Coaches to a surf training session at the Hyundai Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.
Gold Coast Suns AFLW Defender Georgia Clayden said: “We had a tour of the centre and did a training session with some mobility exercises specifically designed for surfing. We also got a chance to go on the trampolines and test our aerial skills. I definitely got some tips which I’ll be using in the water.
“Participating in last year’s Seas The Day event was a lot of fun. Having the opportunity to run out into the surf alongside people like Layne Benchley was a real pinch-yourself moment. It was an awesome vibe of females celebrating other females in sport. It’s a great event and we’re looking forward to this year’s event.”
Surfing Australia National High Performance Director Kate Wilcomes said: “The Celebrity Surf Challenge is a highlight of Seas The Day and this year will again see legends of the sport like seven-time World Champion Layne Beachley and 1993 World Champion Pauline Menczer compete alongside media personalities and AFLW players. It’s great to have the Gold Coast Suns join us again and we can’t wait to catch some waves with them.”
1993 World Champion Pauline Menczer said: “Loved the Celebrity Surf Challenge last year as it made me lift my game! We had a great laugh and came away with a cool winners trophy. We are going to win again, as I’ve been training for it. I want to beat them all!”
Surfing Australia Strength & Conditioning Coach ReniaKorvin, who led the session, said: “I took the group through a surf-specific warm-up and a trampoline session to work on those surf-specific skills to prepare them for Seas The Day.
“Seas The Day is the biggest female participation surfing event in the world. There’ll be plenty of celebrities competing in the Celebrity Surf Challenge, on shortboards and longboards, as well as a surf contest for females of all ages and a festival with heaps of activities the whole family can enjoy.”
The Seas the Day celebrity Surf Challenge will be held at 3.30pm on Saturday, 22nd June.
