Surfing Australia is set to host the world’s largest female participation surf event this Saturday and Sunday at Kingscliff Beach, NSW. Bringing together female surfers of all ages and abilities, Seas The Day aims to encourage women to surf in a pressure-free environment and celebrate their achievements in and out of the water.
A record number of women and girls from across Australia have signed-up for the fun tag-team contest and Celebrity Surf Challenge with world champions, media personalities and Gold Coast Suns AFLW players among those gearing up for some friendly competition. There’s more than $50,000 total in cash, prizes and giveaways up for grabs.
Seven-time World Champion Layne Beachley, 1993 World Champion Pauline Menczer and Big Wave World Record Holder Laura Enever are among the guest speakers and part of a jam-packed program of inspiring talks and workshops.
Professional Surfer India Robinson will be speaking about her feature film “Making It” in the new Film and Photography hub.
“It’s a story following four athletes, myself included, showcasing what we do as competitors and what we push ourselves through to make it, ” Robinson said.
“I’ve gotten through a few injuries and concussions to pursue my dream and I’ve definitely had to go through a few ups and downs. I’m there to hopefully inspire and educate some of the younger girls and also spread awareness on the severity of concussions. I think showcasing that raw behind-the-scenes look, they get to see what I do and what it takes to make it to the highest level of surfing and they can ask me any questions they want and, I just want it to be an empowering session where they get to learn and be inspired.”
Robinson added that Seas The Day was a free event, for everyone to enjoy.
“It’s about encouraging all young girls, females around Australia to come be part of something, empower each other, whether you surf or just want to come down and be a part of a beach day. Sometimes it is a bit daunting to compete against other people when they have a high level of experience or there’s a lot of males surrounding you. It definitely can be an area where we might get a bit scared or if you’re young, you might not want to be in that environment. The Seas The Day festival and doing stuff like this allows those girls and women to have the opportunity to compete in a safe environment.”
Seas the Day Event Director Belén Alvarez Kimble said one to two foot swell was forecast over the weekend, with light winds and some sunshine.
“It’s going to be absolutely perfect for all levels and all the divisions for this event. The competition consists of shortboarders, longboarders, Under 18 and the Salty Girls Under 12 Mini Shredders, which is one of the most popular divisions and brings everyone together to support our next generation of girls surfing. We’re going to be running a workshop with One Wave bringing awareness to mental health, we have yoga, ice baths, food trucks and entertainment.
“To top it off, we’ve got our Celebrity Surf Challenge, which brings world champions, junior champions and women of other sports all together to support the whole movement of women in sports. It’s going to be a really fun festival so bring your family down and support this amazing event for women at Kingscliff Beach this weekend.”
Seas The Day will begin at 7am on Saturday with a Welcome to Country with competition starting at 7:30am on both days.
