South Arm Boardriders win Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle Tasmanian Qualifier

Published on 23/10/2023

North West Boardriders and South Arm Boardriders will represent Tasmania at the 2023/24 Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle Grand Final after an epic state qualifier at Eaglehawk Neck.

Offshore wind and overhead surf greeted South Arm, Park Beach and North West Boardriders in what was an amazing day of club surfing.

South Arm got off to a flying start, comfortably winning the first heat with a total of 30.83 to beat North West (18.4) and Park Beach ( 8.53). Goofy footer Kyle Cooper posted the best wave of the heat with a excellent range 8.00 ride.

In the second knock out heat North West stepped it up a gear to eliminate Park Beach, Matt Gaby (5.33) and current Tasmanian Mens Champion Jy Johannesen (6.00) helping the North to victory over a strong effort from a Tyler Hollmer Cross (6.5) led Park Beach team.

Bragging rights were on the line in the final heat of the day and big scores were the flavour of the early afternoon exchange. South Arm legend Dara Penfold had the judges in a frenzy as she displayed all her power and precision to earn an event high 8.83 ride to put her club in the strong position.

Not to be outdone, North West rallied through some solid surfing from Zoe Gray (6.00) and Jy Johannesen (6.17) but South Arm were simply too good across the board taking the win 38.17 to 13.94 respectively.
