Locals have impressed at the Woolworths Surfers Groms Comp in South Australia on Saturday. Groms were greeted with 2-3ft waves, strong offshore winds and warm weather for Stop No.3 of the series.
Competition was fierce with close heats across the divisions and one upset from an interstate competitor in the U14 Boys. Sam Sparks (Kiama, NSW) took out the blue ribbon U14 Boys, defeating Ashton Crowley (Port Noarlunga South, SA), Angus Kennedy (Cowes, VIC) and Hudson Egan (Hindmarsh Valley, SA).
Isla Kindstrom (Seaford, SA) won the U14 Girls with Priya Jakhwal (Hallett Cove, SA) finishing second and Allegra Caretti (Port Noarlunga, SA) third.
Jemma Crowley (Port Noarlunga South, SA) impressed in the U16 Girls with one of the highest single wave scores of the day, a 8.50 (out of a possible 10).
In the U16 Boys Noah Keelan (Encounter Bay, SA) scored an impressive 16.03 heat total in the final to claim the win in a tight battle with Mitchell Henderson (Port Noarlunga, SA).
Surfing South Australia Contest Director, Craig Potgieter said: “Overall it was a good day for the Woolworths Surfers Groms Comp in South Australia with some great surfing. The groms had a lot of fun with beach games and surf skate sessions in the carpark and we could not have asked for better weather and conditions. Everyone was stoked.”
Top placing South Australian surfers Isla Kindstrom and Ashton Crowley have won an all-expenses paid, three-day camp at the Hyundai Surfing Australia High Performance Centre. While the Le Tan Breaking Through award went to Leo Wilson (West Lakes, SA) for a breakthrough performance.
