Published on 14/04/2022

MARGARET RIVER – WA/AUS (Thursday 14th April 2022) – The Drug Aware WA Trials are set to bounce down next week in Margaret River, guaranteeing one male and one female West Australian surfer the opportunity to compete against the world’s best at the upcoming World Surf League (WSL) Margaret River Pro, which will commence on the 24th April 2022.

The official curtain raiser to a thrilling two weeks of professional surfing in Western Australia, The Drug Aware WA Trials will take place on Wednesday 20th April at Surfers Point, Margaret River. The event will feature 12 of the best males and 12 of the finest female surfers in the state, all vying for that precious spot into the main event of the Margaret River Pro.

Surfing Western Australia CEO Mark Lane said, “This opportunity for one lucky guy & girl is truly the chance of a lifetime. To surf against their heroes and world champions is something they will remember forever.”

Trials surfers have been selected based on their performances over the past 12 months, with a mixture of local boardrider club champions, state champions, national champions, specialty event winners, as well the highest rated WA surfers from the WSL Qualifying Series (QS).

Some of the invited surfers into the event include last year’s winners Jacob Willcox (Margaret River), and Willow Hardy (Margaret River), who will take on the likes of Felicity Palmateer (Yanchep), Kael Walsh (Yallingup), Isi Campbell (Denmark), Solomon Pogue-Englert (Gracetown), as well as Mia McCarthy (Cowaramup) and Ben Spence (Margaret River), to name just a few.

Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks said, “Our surfers have followed different pathways to get their opportunity to compete in the Trials event. We’ve got a great mix of youth and experience and I wish all our surfers the very best of luck.”

The Drug Aware WA Trials provides an unparalleled opportunity for local surfers to compete against the world’s best surfers. The 36th Margaret River Pro, the fifth stop on the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), will be held from 24th April to the 4th May 2022 at Surfers Point.
