The Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle Set To Role Into West Oz This Weekend

Published on 16/09/2021

TRIGG BEACH – WA/AUS (Thursday 16th September 2021), Rivalries are set to intensify and competition will be fierce this weekend, as five West Australian boardriding clubs prepare to duel it out at the third event of the Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle (ABB), along Perth’s metro beaches.

Now in its ninth season, the Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle is the country’s biggest grassroots boardriders event, involving more than 60 of Australia’s best clubs, boasting a $112,700 in prize money.

After events in Queensland and South Australia, it’s now WA clubs opportunity to do battle for $3,000 in prize money and a guaranteed spot into the ABB National Final, scheduled to take place in Newcastle in February 2022.

Clubs will nominate a squad of six surfers – 3x Open Males, 1x Open Female, 1x Over-35 Master (male or female) and 1x Under-18 junior (male or female), who will compete in an exciting and dynamic format. Clubs will need to display their depth of talent and understand the tactics and strategies needed to maximise their scoring opportunity.

Defending event champions Trigg Point Boardriders, will have spearhead an impressive field competing, with an exciting mix of regional and metropolitan clubs set to participate.

“The ABB is always a great event and after winning last year, we know we’ve got the target on our back,” said Trigg  Point Club President Pascal Hutchinson. “The conditions are looking really fun for Sunday, it will be awesome to see if we can go back-to-back at this prestigious event.”

Trigg Point will be challenged by clubs from Margaret River, Yallingup, Scarborough, and Trigg Junior Boardriders’ when competition gets underway on Sunday morning.
“Surfing is typically an individual sport so when you get the chance to compete as part of a team it creates this wave of support and camaraderie that is hard to replicate,” said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. “I’m sure there will be some fireworks in the water and the format provides for a truly exciting event, every wave is important and each surfer has the chance to make a difference for their club.”

The Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle will kick off on Sunday morning from approximately 8am with finals concluding by the early afternoon. A fun sized swell and light winds are set to provide the perfect setting for some epic surfing and enthralling battles for everyone that hits that water.
