The Spit Likely To Host Qld Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battles Series State Qualifier This Weekend

Published on 27/08/2021

GOLD COAST, QUEENSLAND (Wednesday 25 August 2021) – The 2021 Hyundai Australian Boardriders Battle national series will kick off this weekend on the Gold Coast.

The one-day event will showcase Queensland’s best boardrider clubs, with each club selecting teams to surf at the event.

Each team must include 2 x open men, 1 x open woman, 1 x master (over 35 years) and 1 x junior (under 18 years).

Each surfer must return to the beach after completing their waves, before ‘releasing’ the next team member into the waves. It’s definitely not your average surfing competition!

The Gold Coast event is the first of the series, which then moves to South Australia, Western Australia, New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria and back to New South Wales.

There is a mixture of both Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast boardrider clubs competing in the event, including Snapper Rocks, Burleigh Heads, Currumbin Alley, Noosa, Kawana, Coolum and many others.

Last year’s placings were North Shore Boardriders (Sunshine Coast) (1st), Snapper Rocks Boardriders (Gold Coast) (2nd) and Noosa Boardriders (Sunshine Coast) (3rd).

Some notable names competing in the event include:

Joel Parkinson (Snapper Rocks Boardriders)

Sophie McCulloch (North Shore Boardriders)

Liam O’Brien (Burleigh Boardriders)

Ellie Brooks (Mermaid Nobbys Miami Boardriders)
