URBNSURF And Sporting Schools Team Up To Take Billanook College Surfing!

Published on 24/03/2021

Students at Billanook college were recently thrilled to try surfing for the first time through the Sporting Schools Program. After coordinating with Surfing Australia, many of the school’s year 6 students got their first taste of surfing at Melbourne’s URBNSURF with qualified coaches and state-of-the-art facilities. URBNSURF is now a registered coaching provider where Sporting School funding can be used. Teacher Kate Prior decided upon surfing as she was wanting the kids to try an activity that was a lot of fun but also pushed them outside of their comfort zone. Although many of Bilanook’s students live two hours from the coast, a large number of them holiday at the beach and she saw this as a great pathway to further surfing.

“It was harder to get up than I thought but so much fun, but the teachers taught me to lean back and get up from my knees and I’d definitely do it again,” said student Jaiden.

The combination of authentic, ocean-like waves, combined with the challenge of taking on a new and demanding sport had the kids absolutely pumped up (they were already asking when they could surf again)  and the school will be running again with the program next year.
