Woolworths SurfGroms Season Set to Make a Splash

Published on 14/09/2023

The Woolworths SurfGroms season is ready to make a splash as it kicks off this weekend, marking the program’s 13th year. More than 5,000 groms, aged between 5 and 12-years-old, are set to ride the waves at surf schools nationwide.

Building on the success of previous seasons, Surfing Australia, in collaboration with Woolworths, is thrilled to continue nurturing Australia’s young surf talent. The program will commence with the introduction of “Come Try Days” in selected regions this September. These special events offer kids the chance to experience the Woolworths SurfGroms program for free before committing to the full program.

Surfing Australia’s Head of Partnerships, Clarissa Pike said: “The Woolworths SurfGroms program teaches kids not only how to navigate the ocean safely but also imparting a skill for life. Woolworths, as the ideal partner for our Woolworths SurfGroms Program, provides tangible support to Aussie junior surfing, with a focus on fresh food that fuels a healthy and active lifestyle for kids. Their support enables us to foster the sport at the grassroots level and nurture the next generation of surfers.”

Since its inception in October 2011, the Woolworths SurfGroms program has introduced more than 100,000 Aussie kids to the world of surfing. Designed for 5 to 12-year-olds of all skill levels, the program incorporates group-based games to equip kids with essential surfing and paddling skills while ensuring they have fun along the way.

In the upcoming season, the program will place a renewed emphasis on nutrition and the advantages of healthy eating for optimal performance. This focus will be brought to the groms through Woolworths’ Pick Fresh Play Fresh campaign.

Woolworths’ Head of Community and Sponsorships Sarah De La Mare said: “As today’s Fresh Food People, we’re dedicated to enhancing the health and wellbeing of Australian children. We’re thrilled to have supported Surfing Australia for the past six years in developing groms within a fun and competitive surfing environment, educating kids and families about the natural connection between healthy eating habits and Australian sport, helping them perform at their best and follow in their heroes’ footsteps – if you pick fresh, you play fresh.”

The Woolworths SurfGroms program offers five distinct skill levels nationally, divided into two age categories: MiniGroms (5 – 8-years-old) and SuperGroms (9 – 12-years-old). Rip Curl presents Woolworths SurfGroms, with support from NSP Surfboards, Le Tan and Ruffie Rustic Foods.

Woolworths SurfGroms programs are available through the Surfing Australia Surf Schools Network, featuring over 50 delivery partners throughout the country, accessible through the program’s website HERE.

Woolworths SurfGroms is proudly sponsored by Rip Curl, NSP Surfboards, Le Tan and Ruffie Rustic Foods.
